Someone’s Universe: The Art of Eugene Carchesio

25 October 2008 – 1 February 2009 Gallery 4 QAG

'Someone’s Universe' is a focused survey of work by the leading Brisbane contemporary artist Eugene Carchesio. Known for his repeated use of particular images and patterns, his work has a sense of rhythm and composition that echoes his keen interest in music. He works with the little impermanent materials of our lives, such as paper, cardboard and matchboxes. In his quest to explore the big questions of life, these simple materials convey both the insignificance and affirmation of our place within it. Carchesio finds inspiration in the work of the Russian constructivists, the futurists and Joseph Beuys — a diverse group of avant-garde artists who share a utopian vision, an intuitive and intellectual approach, and a belief in the integration of art and life.
